Cathodic protection (CP) is a corrosion control technique widely used to protect metallic structures, such as pipelines, offshore platforms and chloride contaminated reinforced concrete constructions. The reader can find in this text: the principles of CP by immunity and passivity as well as of cathodic prevention; protection conditions for uniform and localised corrosion of bare and coated carbon steel, stainless steels, aluminium, copper alloys and titanium; current and potential distribution; monitoring techniques; interference-related problems; side effects; anodic materials for galvanic and impressed current systems; an historical outline. CP applications in soil, in sea water and in concrete are thoroughly illustrated through choice of CP system, design and set up procedures, monitoring and case studies.
